GIFs: A Deep Dive

The Pros and Cons of

Working with GIFs

What are GIFs?

Graphics Interchange Format, or GIFs, were originally designed to support simple animations, and have become a go-to tool for website platforms since they’re creation over thirty years ago. GIFs have now evolved into a versatile medium that can easily add engaging assets to website development and branding strategies.

However, with new formats like Lottie Files and Rive Animations coming to the forefront of web development, it’s time to take a look at the drawbacks of using GIFs in your marketing, and how to best use GIFs to enhance your brand strategy without falling behind on new formats.

Dynamic Content

GIFs can be a great way to integrate visually interesting assets onto websites, ensuring the user experience is more interesting, and making complex topics easy to understand and fun to look at. While there are limitations in colour usage, the reliability of GIFs can make them a great asset if you're exploring dynamic web content for the first time.

Interactivity

Making your GIFs interactive can mean more than your page looking good - interactive GIFs can level up the user journey by becoming clickable buttons. However, it's important to note that since GIFs aren't natively interactive, converting them into these type of elements might take some coding knowledge, and complex GIFs are likely to increase load time.

Brand Identity

Beyond simply being animations, GIFs can play a huge role in expressing the unique personality of a brand. Acting as a channel for the brand's humor, vibe and tone, and aligning with its overall identity. Ultimately, they contribute to setting the brand apart in the market, providing a refined and engaging way to connect with a diverse audience.

Social Media Usage

GIFs are also highly shareable on social media when interacting with followers, or when tagging brands at events. When attendees or followers tag a brand using a GIF or sticker, it goes beyond a simple mention, instead promoting a snippet of the brand's personality. This not only amplifies online visibility but also encourages engagement by creating a visual and memorable connection with a wider audience.

User Retention & SEO

Visually striking elements and animation can help reduce bounce rates on your site and improve engagement - and GIFs can certainly help! However larger GIFs can be problematic for load times due to poor compression; essentially, the more images included in your GIF means the longer the load time. For more complex website assets we'd suggest exploring using .mp4s, Lottie Files, or interactive Rive files, which are more optimised for faster load times and therefore better SEO.

Limitations

While GIFs can add a dynamic and engaging dimension to digital content, they aren't without their limitations. One significant drawback lies in their restricted design options, particularly when it comes to colors. GIFs are limited to a palette of 256 colors, which, in comparison to other image formats, can limit the vibrancy and brand accuracy of the assets.

Additionally, it’s also hard to overlook the issue of the large file sizes found in GIFs. Despite their visual appeal, GIFs can be data-heavy, which may lead to slower loading times, negatively affecting user experience. Swift website performance is crucial, especially on mobile devices, meaning that while GIFs excel in many areas, these limitations could undermine the positive effects of incorporating them into a broader multimedia strategy.

Summary

To summarise, integrating GIFs into your website can elevate the user experience by offering a visually stimulating journey, and (with some coding knowledge) can also serve as interactive elements, serve as clickable buttons, inviting users to explore further and actively engage with the content. Beyond the visuals, these animations can also play a crucial role in conveying brand personality, injecting life into online interactions.

However, it's essential to navigate the limitations, such as restricted color options and file sizes, to strike a balance between visual appeal and optimal performance.

Despite these considerations, GIFs remain powerful tools for leaving a lasting digital impression across social media with the use of stickers. Their unique blend of visual appeal and efficiency makes GIFs indispensable in shaping a vibrant, engaging, and memorable online brand.
